About the Project

PalmKobo is a freeware, 360° scrolling, shoot 'em up game by Toby Gray. It is based on XKobo by Akira Higuchi (see http://freshmeat.net/projects/xkobo) and Kobo Deluxe, an SDL port by David Olofson ( http://olofson.net/skobo). PalmKobo runs on Palm OS version 3.5 New Feature Set (or later, including Palm OS 5) and requires 8-bit colour at a resolution of at least 160x160 pixels. One or more ports for earlier versions of the Palm OS and/or less colourful screens may be developed later if there is sufficient demand.

The object of the game is to destroy the fortresses by shooting their cores (a purple ball in the middle). There are, of course, various obstacles on the way that must be overcome or destroyed, including asteroids and various enemy craft.

The Stage Sets System

PalmKobo gets information about the stages (levels) to be played from databases. Click here for details.

Developer's Journal

2003-06-17: Palm OS 5 alpha release. After an exchange of emails with Pedro Branco, PalmKobo is now Palm OS 5 compatible and supports the Tungsten's 5-way navigator (see the 'Preferences' dialog under the 'Options' menu).
To download the "PalmKobo0.4.zip" file, which contains "PalmKobo.prc", "XKobo Stages.pdb", and "Wolfgang J Stages.pdb" click here. To download the source code, "PalmKobo0.4.tar.gz", click here.
I don't plan to spend much, if any, time on PalmKobo in the near future, as there hasn't been much evidence of interest in it. If you are a user and would like to see any improvements and/or changes, email me here.

Next expected release (excluding minor updates): none planned, as there has been little interest in this project

Toby Thanks

His lovely wife Louise for her support and encouragement (and the alternate title, KoboBaby),
Akira Higuchi for the original game, XKobo,
David Olofson for his excellent SDL port, Kobo Deluxe,
and twokidsinagarage for their font, Bush, available as part of the free font collection you can download from their website at www.twokidsinagarage.com. A variation of this font is used in PalmKobo to display the score and so on.
Pedro Branco for his help in making PalmKobo Palm OS 5 compatible and in adding support for the 5-way navigator's left, right and centre "keys".
